The Helping Hand Mission Band entertains and inspires countless people through their music and dance.

But their mission is much more. It’s a lifestyle. Community. Commitment. Some members started in the band when they were 5, and are now in their 40’s. Others grew up in the band and are now raising their own children in it. They are family. And Sylvia, the “mother.” She is an inspiration to the band and to the community. And to us.

Shannon developed a relationship with Sylvia through community events with The Helping Hand Mission, Capital Club 16, Good Times Assurance Co., and Contemporary Art Museum. Eve first saw them perform at a First Friday at CAM, and knew right away that she wanted to photograph them.

As we both wanted get to know more of who they are and what they do, we decided to collaborate with each other, and with the band, and do this through photography and interviews. We are producing a book to document the year. In the meantime, please follow along with us here.

We would like to thank Sylvia, the band members and thier families for letting us into thier lives and sharing their stories over the past year.
